snow, winter portrait session at Robinettes Apple Haus, Grand Rapids, Michigan

After meeting the rest of the family, Lisa, wanted to do something for herself so we set off to West Michigan Robinette’s Apple Orchard to take some crisp, fun winter pictures. They turned out better than I could have imagined. Who knew I would have enjoyed being out in the cold snow like that? Lisa made taking the photos effortless as she courageously trudged through new paths and boldly wandered without a coat handy. I was bundled up like an eskimo.

She’s expecting a baby boy this November! Congratulations, Lexi! We already did a mini maternity session as sisters, but this was her real, own personal shoot. For this session, we wandered around downtown Grand Rapids for an offbeat maternity photoshoot. Think ‘high fashion’, urban, and model! And she’s so tiny, sometimes it blurred the line of ‘maternity shoot’ and just ‘portrait shoot’… without me getting in her way 🙂

There’s nothing like a good construction site, a beautiful face, and an awesome summer day to bring out a great session. I’ve always loved the contrast of rubble and the refined. I’ll let these photos speak for themselves.

We have had the pleasure of watching Anna grow in 4-session series of maternity and baby pictures. A couple weeks ago, she turned the big O-N-E! I can’t believe how fast that goes and I’m not even her parent!

Check out her previous sessions:
Maternity

6 months

For her final photoshoot, we met up in Rockford for a combination of rural, grassy field fun, and a little urbany downtown brick action. Sarah, Anna’s mom, did a fantastic job of making color-matched props for the photoshoot, so if you want to know where those gems came from, you’ll have to find her! Check out some more of these baby girl pictures.

Who’s the Don in DonThao?

May 23rd, 2012

Don… DonThao? What you may not know about DonThao Photography is that I, Thao, owe a lot of the great shots to my assistant (and husband), Donny. While I’m checking exposure and shooting, he’s thinking of the next pose and scoping out the next location. He’s also checking out how your clothing falls to make […]

While I’m checking exposure and shooting, he’s thinking of the next pose and scoping out the next location. He’s also checking out how your clothing falls to make sure that the wrinkles are right and even entertaining/distracting the baby for that perfect shot. This is how we end up with 80-100 great images to send you after only an hour to hour-and-a-half session.

He’s also quite the goofball as you can see. As I take more side shots of him preparing for our photoshoots, I am uploading on flickr.

Now, you know why I married him.

{Rachel} Stylish Portraits in Downtown Grand Rapids

On Easter Sunday morning, we ventured downtown to meet Rachel, an exchange student to Muskegon High School from Germany, for a wonderful photoshoot. She brought along lovely outfits and was brave (it was quite chilly between the buildings of downtown Grand Rapids). We hung around Monroe Center, greeted by empty walkways and few cars in our way. Shooting photos on a Sunday is… awesome. The whole city was ours.

Rachel did a great job bringing her own ideas to the session. Of course, I could not have done it without the creativity of my husband who ran around, scouting for the perfect backdrop and stage for the next set of photos.
