Grand Rapids Family, Baby, and Newborn Photographer

I stopped taking on sessions for the month of April in anticipation of meeting this little guy… our second son, born on April 14! It’s been fun becoming a family of four. And while I haven’t taken on client sessions this month, I’ve been working on our own Fresh 48 session that I hope to share soon, as well as some other favorites from our ‘sessions’ at home. Stay tuned for these, but don’t worry, I pick up client sessions in May!

This beauty is about to turn one and I have enjoyed documenting her first year.

I love lifestyle shoots like this. Emerson’s so genuinely happy in her home, just hanging out with mom and dad.

This was a generational shoot – both paternal and maternal grandparents joined us for the fun!

{Project 365} Week 3 Toddler Photography

January 24th, 2015

{Day 15} It’s not unusual to see this around our house. He loves to line up his toys, especially his trains and cars. Sometimes, they’re all facing the same direction.

{Day 16} It’s always a fave part of our days to be able to sit down with him and read together. When I say together, I mean it. He’s regurgitating the stories from memory and I think enjoys reading TO us just as much.

{Day 17} See? I told you he loves to read.

{Day 18} I decided not to hire out maternity photos with this pregnancy. But I still needed to document this bump too so I set up a tripod. Donny saw me in process and offered to take these photos. I took some of my own so that I still met the challenge of a photo a day! I wanted to make sure I got a few good ones of me with my baby BUMP and the coolest toddler I know. Check out that fauxhawk hair.

{Day 19} I am usually much more drawn to vibrant color in my photos, but there’s always something sweet when you apply it to a lifestyle ‘day in the life’ photo of your toddler playing with his wooden blocks.

{Day 20} I often wonder why he bothers with the fork other than we tell him to. He usually takes te fork to pick up food like this pictured spaghetti, only to use his hands to remove it from said fork to stuff his mouth.

{Day 21} With just a bit of water, our toddler’s hair can stand straight up. You should see it after a nap.

{Project 365} Week 2 Toddler Photography

January 17th, 2015

{Day 8} Bottoms up!

personal 365 - crying terrible twos toddler photography

{Day 9} It’s not always happy time in toddler-country. I’m pretty sure he was waiting patiently for his dinner… or maybe he didn’t like the food. At any rate, this is his crying face. I couldn’t choose between the two following for Day 9 because it told our standard dinner-time story.

{Day 9 continued} Plus, in the second photo, he had his fingers the way I do when I angrily point at someone. He obviously got it from his mama.

{Day 10} We’ve been transforming the downstairs (what was) office + guest room into big brother’s toddler room, complete with play area so that I don’t have to trip over his toys in the family room as much. He was pretty geeked about the IKEA shelving that will now house his toys that he climbed in with his Halloween pumpkin and I was able to snap this photo.

{Day 11} There’s not much to say here other than he is one happy boy!

{Day 12} This perspective makes him look so big and in my mind, he has really gotten big. He takes giant stand-up steps up the staircase now and only revisits the climbing position when he is in fact climbing down the stairs. It’s one of those milestones that just happens one day.

{Day 13} This time, we were at the top of the stairs when he decided it would be funny to shut the door on me. He hasn’t quite figured out how to unlatch yet… which is a very good thing.

{Day 14} Finally, a daily 365 pic in vertical orientation :). He has a few ‘favorite’ pajamas and this Mickey Mouse tuxedo that he got from his auntie is one of them. He gets so excited to open the closet door and model, i.e. dance, in it.

{Project 365} Week 1 Photography

January 10th, 2015

I have done a Project 365 in limited ways in the past, namely an iPhone photo of my son every day in front of the same background (a blanket I had made for him) to document his growth. For the first 2 years of his life, I was probably 95% successful at a ‘photo a day’. When I was travelling for work away from him, Donny took over.

It was a tough project. Even with just a quick photo on your phone, it was real hard. My toddler is too curious to lay still even for a quick photo. As nice as it was to see these images fill up my phone capacity, it was more about documentation than it was challenging my photographic development. So this year, and I did happen to start on New Year’s Day, I am engaging in a Project 365 with my DSLR in an effort to grow, document, and tell our story. I’ll probably prep them for the blog in batches, but the act of picking up my camera will be daily. This year is full of excitement too as we await the arrival of our second son!

So without further delay, here’s {Day 1} Trains. The boy loves his trains. Over Christmas, we, Santa, and his uncle added to this toy addiction with more Thomas and Friends and the full Imaginarium train table.

{Day 2} was about exploring the train table… not the top with the fun railways and train cars, but the underside :).

{Day 3} We visited one of our close friends turning one! It was a Mickey Mouse themed party which meant Kyler was in LOVE with the d├ęcor, especially the full-sized Mickey balloon.

{Day 4} The kid loves bath time. It wasn’t always the case and I can’t remember what happened for him to change his mind, but I am typically greeted by smiles like these when it’s bath time.

{Day 5} Yes, I expect there to be many more pictures of this little boy with his Thomas the Train & Friends trains.

{Day 6} Donny has been away at school for the past year+, so on the weekends, I love to see them hanging out together. He loves his dad!

{Day 7} Slamming rice milk like it’s his job.
