{Donny & Thao} Self Portrait Maternity

August 14th, 2012

It’s hard to always get the pictures you personally want, even if you are photographers. Sometimes that tripod and remote just doesn’t get what you want without 50 trips of "pose, click the remote, freeze, check the picture, ‘crap – got to take that again’, repeat" The best choice was to hire another local artist […]

It’s hard to always get the pictures you personally want, even if you are photographers. Sometimes that tripod and remote just doesn’t get what you want without 50 trips of "pose, click the remote, freeze, check the picture, ‘crap – got to take that again’, repeat"

The best choice was to hire another local artist to take our photos – and we did.

But, we still had to at least TRY getting our own photos :).

We’re pretty goofy and it would not be right to just get serious expressions for memory’s sake. We know better than that! So the tripod was set up and here’s what we got. On the ones where only one of us were in the photo, we obviously took turns taking the photos.

We took others – check back to see. Clients always come first so my personal projects will have to wait!

Who’s the Don in DonThao?

May 23rd, 2012

Don… DonThao? What you may not know about DonThao Photography is that I, Thao, owe a lot of the great shots to my assistant (and husband), Donny. While I’m checking exposure and shooting, he’s thinking of the next pose and scoping out the next location. He’s also checking out how your clothing falls to make […]

Don… DonThao? What you may not know about DonThao Photography is that I, Thao, owe a lot of the great shots to my assistant (and husband), Donny. While I’m checking exposure and shooting, he’s thinking of the next pose and scoping out the next location. He’s also checking out how your clothing falls to make sure that the wrinkles are right and even entertaining/distracting the baby for that perfect shot. This is how we end up with 80-100 great images to send you after only an hour to hour-and-a-half session.

goofy photographer assistant

He’s also quite the goofball as you can see. As I take more side shots of him preparing for our photoshoots, I am uploading on flickr.

Now, you know why I married him.

Surprise Orchid

April 3rd, 2011

My husband is pretty awesome. We had a date night last week – just a simple Indian dinner at a local restaurant, nothing fancy. When I came home from work, I was surprised by this beauty sitting on the coffee table. Lucky me.

{Megan & Bill} Welcome Home, Soldier Session: Grand Rapids Photographer

December 28th, 2010

I recently posted this teaser of Megan and Bill after a shoot about a week and a half ago and I just finished up the DVD. I have never been to the Pita House downtown, but I will definitely make it a habit more often… if I ever make it downtown. (We had dinner there […]

I recently posted this teaser of Megan and Bill after a shoot about a week and a half ago and I just finished up the DVD.

Enjoying a drink together in the old school style diner (actually, it's Pita Pit in downtown Grand Rapids)

I have never been to the Pita House downtown, but I will definitely make it a habit more often… if I ever make it downtown. (We had dinner there after the shoot and it was delicious!) We stumbled inside to warm Megan up during the first half of the shoot. The poor thing had wet gloves and it was freezing outside. Lo and behold, it was the perfect setting for the semi-themed vintage session.

Here are some of my favorites… don’t forget about {The Famous Kiss} from the teaser, definitely a fave.

I told you that red dress was perfect. …and don’t forget to support our troops!

{Megan & Bill} The Famous Kiss

Bill had been away from his beautiful wife, Megan, for the past year in Afghanistan. He returned home just in time for the holidays (awesome gift, btw) and we did a welcome home photoshoot in downtown Grand Rapids – right in front of the beautiful tree and Rosa Parks Circle ice skating rink.

The happy couple reenacted “The Famous Kiss”, a picture taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt in New York’s Time Square on August 14, 1945, after the victorious end of WWII… right here in our own little city. Megan dressed up with vintage inspiration (wait ’til you see the killer red dress) and Bill was head to toe in his dress uniform (rather debonair!).

Reenactment of The Famous Kiss

After a year apart, you couldn’t keep your hands off each other either.

Nothing like a kiss from your husband after he comes home from a war

COLD, but such a fun shoot. Can’t wait to go through the rest of these pictures… stay tuned.
Welcome home, Bill, and thank you both for your service!
